The 2011 Oklahoma earthquake that could prove to be the largest ever for the state was preceded by multiple quakes throughout the day, including a magnitude 4.7 earthquake that shook the same area early Saturday. The USGS said the quake struck at 10:53 p.m. and was centered about 44 mile east-northeast of Oklahoma City.

There have been no deaths associated with the Oklahoma earthquake, but damage was extensive. According to local media sources chimneys collapsed through roofs of homes in Lincoln County – 50 miles from Oklahoma City and damage to the Prague library included collapsed air conditioning ducts and a collapsed wall. Multiple highways and streets have buckled from the tremors, including Highway 62 and other county roads.

Oklahoma State University was facing Kansas State in a big rivalry football game when the stadium at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater began to shake. The shaking didn’t seem to faze either team as they played against the clock with the Oklahoma Cowboys hanging on to beat Kansas 52-45.

In quieter surrounds, a retired Muskogee advertising and public relations executive, Robert Rhea, said he felt his home rocking for about 15 to 20 seconds.

“Oh man, it just about shook this old man out of his TV chair,” said Rhea, 70, speaking with The Associated Press by  telephone.

This earthquake is comparable to the magnitude 5.5 April 9, 1952, earthquake centered near El Reno which affected most of Oklahoma and parts of Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, and Texas. Damage from that earthquake was not extensive, but many people in the epicenter area were alarmed, some to near panic. Much of the damage from the 1952 earthquake was similar to what people in Oklahoma experienced last night. Portions of chimneys fell in El Reno and Ponca City. Bricks loosened from a building wall and tile facing of commercial buildings bulged at Oklahoma City.
