Michele Bachman Economy

In a move sure to anger many Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., said in a speech today in Ames, Iowa that the Occupy Wall Street protesters are pointing the finger at the wrong crowd. Instead, Bachman says the problems aren’t caused by the capitalists on Wall Street, but by “politicians who wink at their political donors, and through the force of law put their competitors out of business.”

Bachman warned Occupy Wall Street protestors to “wake up” and stop pointing the finger for the country’s financial woes on those that run the free market and create jobs. The presidential contender didn’t name names, but made the broad sweeping statement that the “government is doing what both the constitution and decent morality prohibit, that is cronyism capitalism, or forcefully taking your money for the purpose of paying off a politician’s political friends,” she said, warning that cronyism could turn the US into a “banana republic,” ABC reported.

According to a former campaign manager of Bachman she has been struggling to come up with fresh new ideas for an economic policy to fight the erosion in her poll numbers. Bachman also used the Iowa speech to outline her ideas on a federal income tax plan.

Bachmann announced she supports a “fairer, flatter” system and believes in a single flat tax, but does support “abolishing” the current tax code. Her theory is everyone needs to pay something in federal taxes in order to be “invested” in the country. She said, “Even if they can only afford $10, they need to pay something.”
